VP-1 POPs 13th Reunion
Our 13th reunion was held at the Camp Perry Lodging and Conference Center on the shores of Lake Erie near Port Clinton, Ohio, from September 10th through the 13th, hosted by Carson and Christine Hunt.
The camp is administered by the State of Ohio and is available year-round to civilians, veterans, retired and active military; first come, first served, with motel rooms, cottages, transient quarters, and RV/tent camping.
There were several options for folks within a few miles and much more for those who wanted to venture out further or stay a while longer in Buckeye Land.
The two main options were; a day (or better part of one) to South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay (located on the island) which entails a ferry ride and a visit to Liberty Aviation Museum.
South Bass Island is Ohio’s Key West, but not so rowdy, however in the summertime very busy but should be slowed down a bit in September. There was much to see and do from restaurants to wineries. The biggest and tallest attraction by far is Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie which took place near South Bass Island, where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led a fleet to victory in one of the most decisive naval battles to occur in the War of 1812. On an isthmus, the memorial celebrates the peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States which followed the war. You could take your rental, ride with friends, or rent a golf cart and once on the island; everyone wanted to go further and see more than any of our legs wanted to carry us!
Liberty Aviation Museum was much more than the name implied. Within its hangars are land vehicles, airplanes, and a WWll PT Boat under reconstruction. A number of us got lucky and were able to have lunch at the adjoining 50’s Tin Goose Diner, built in Elizabeth, New Jersey. libertyaviationmuseum.org
